Devizes and Roundway Boundary Review

You may have seen recent reports in the local press that Wiltshire Council have been asked to review the boundaries between Devizes Town and the Parish of Roundway.  This is an issue which has been around for a long time (the last time it was considered formally was some 12 years ago) and there is no doubt that it will continue to generate concerns for as long as the two parishes remain separate.

Devizes Guardians have members on both the Town Council and Roundway Parish Council, and we support the case for re-examining the boundary to ensure that it remains relevant to the needs of the residents of both parishes.  There is no doubt that the current boundary, which does not take account of any geographical features or obvious administrative differences, is both arbitrary and confusing.  With some streets split between the two parishes it is no wonder that many find it hard to know whether they live in one or the other.

What is most important in considering any potential change is, however, how it will affect those who live in each parish and what will be to their greatest benefit.  We cannot afford for the residents of either parish to be disadvantaged merely for the sake of administrative convenience.  The acid test is whether re-drawing the boundary or amalgamating the parishes will assist in continuing to provide cost effective local services.
